Bouncing Universes with Varying Constants
We investigate the behaviour of exact closed bouncing Friedmann universes in theories with varying constants. We show that the simplest BSBM varying-alpha theory leads to a bouncing universe. The value of alpha increases monotonically, remaining approximately constant during most of each cycle, but increasing significantly around each bounce. When dissipation is introduced we show that in each ...
متن کاملBouncing and cyclic universes from brane models
We consider a D3-brane as boundary of a five dimensional charged anti de Sitter black hole. We show that the charge of the black hole induces a regular cosmological evolution for the scale factor of the brane, with a smooth transition between a contracting and an eventual expanding phase. Simple analytical solutions can be obtained in the case of a vanishing effective cosmological constant on t...
متن کاملAveraged energy conditions and quantum inequalities.
In this paper, connections are uncovered between the averaged weak (AWEC) and averaged null (ANEC) energy conditions, and quantum inequality restrictions (uncertainty principle-type inequalities) on negative energy. In twoand four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, we examine quantized, free massless, minimally-coupled scalar fields . In a two-dimensional spatially compactified Minkowski universe...
متن کاملAveraged energy conditions and evaporating black holes.
In this paper the averaged weak (AWEC) and averaged null (ANEC) energy conditions, together with uncertainty principle-type restrictions on negative energy (“quantum inequalities”), are examined in the context of evaporating black hole backgrounds in both two and four dimensions. In particular, integrals over only half-geodesics are studied. We determine the regions of the spacetime in which th...
متن کاملBouncing Universes in String-inspired Gravity
We consider the effects on cosmology of higher-derivative modifications of (effective) gravity that make it asymptotically free without introducing ghosts. The weakening of gravity at short distances allows pressure to prevent the singularity, producing a solution with contraction preceding expansion.
